Well, it was a busy summer — so busy, in fact, that I barely realized it’s now fall. Except I’m at the Banff Centre right now, looking out at the snowy Rocky Mountains from my studio window. Definitely not summer.
Anyway, I finished my thesis! Today I will order my cap and gown for the ceremony in November. I wish that the actual project was as close to completion as my MFA degree. But alas, so much more work. That’s why I’m at the Banff Centre for the Arts right now, working as an Artistic Associate and writing out song arrangements for a vocal ensemble. I hope to record the album in the new year, and be able to perform the arrangements.
Though “the whale project” — now known as Songs For a Lost Pod — is still in progress, I do have two new pieces to share!
The first is an experimental Audio Postcard called Beach Rub, presented with the Canadian Association for Sound Ecology. It’s an audio portrait of my experience last summer waiting to see orcas rub their bellies on the beach at Bere Point on Malcolm Island, BC.
The second is a composition I did for Portrait Sonore’s Vancouver architecture walk. The piece is inspired by landscape architect Cornelia Oberlander’s garden beside the law courts at Robson Square. Check it out here. You can also download the Portrait Sonore app for your phone and do a walking tour!
Sending you love and warmth through the ether,
Leah
